Writing better prompts: a simple framework

Most disappointing AI answers come from unclear requests. This six-part framework helps you ask for exactly what you want, every time.

An AI assistant can only work with what you give it. A vague request gets a vague answer. The good news: you don't need special tricks. You need to be clear, and clarity is a skill anyone can learn.

The six parts of a clear prompt

Not every prompt needs all six, but checking them will improve almost any request.

  1. Role: who should the AI act as?
  2. Task: what exactly should it do?
  3. Context: what background does it need?
  4. Constraints: what limits apply?
  5. Format: how should the answer look?
  6. Example: what does a good answer look like?

Before and after

Before:

Tell me about budgeting.

After:

Act as a friendly personal finance coach.
Explain how to make a simple monthly budget.
I'm 24, just started my first full-time job, and have never budgeted before.
Keep it under 300 words and avoid financial jargon.
Format it as five numbered steps, then a one-sentence tip.

The second prompt tells the AI who you are, what you need and what "done" looks like. The answer will be far more useful.

Each part, explained

Role

Giving a role sets the tone and level of expertise. "Act as a patient tutor" gets a different answer than "act as a senior engineer". Both can be right; it depends on what you need.

Task

Use a clear action verb: explain, compare, summarize, draft, list, rewrite, check. If you have more than one task, number them.

Context

This is the part most people skip, and it matters most. Who is the answer for? What do you already know? What have you tried? The AI can't guess your situation.

Constraints

Length, tone, reading level, things to avoid, sources to use. Constraints stop the AI from wandering.

Format

Ask for the shape you want: a table, a checklist, bullet points, an email draft. You'll spend less time reformatting.

Example

If you have a sample of what good looks like, include it. Examples are one of the most reliable ways to get consistent results.

Tip: If an answer misses the mark, don't start over. Reply with what to change: "Shorter, and use a table instead." AI assistants are good at revising.

Common mistakes

  • Asking several unrelated questions at once. Split them up.
  • Assuming it knows your situation. Say it out loud.
  • Accepting the first answer. Treat it as a draft and refine.
  • Sharing private information. Don't paste passwords, financial details or anything you wouldn't want stored.
